High-performance COD removal with HFNF technology
The Challenge
Due to strict local wastewater discharge regulations, our customer—a cellulose production company—was looking for a technology to reduce the high concentration of organics in its wastewater. The objective was to lower the chemical oxygen demand (COD) to acceptable levels through a chemical-free treatment step, prior to a reverse osmosis system designed for water reuse.
The Solution
NX Filtration’s HFNF technology provided an ideal solution to meet the customer’s requirements. The system was designed as a single-stage feed & bleed configuration, comprising 44 dNF40 modules. Operating at a flux of 20 LMH, the system ran continuously for two years without fibre breakage, demonstrating robust and reliable performance. Maintenance cleaning—using 200 mg/L chlorine at pH >10—was required only once every three days, which is a notably long interval for high-COD feed water. A final treatment step with a filtration capacity of 44 m3/h, aligned with the customer’s requirements, ensured the desired water quality for reuse.
The Result
The HFNF system demonstrated efficient and reliable performance, operating at 75% water recovery and a flux of 20 LMH, while achieving 80% COD removal. The system consistently produced permeate of the required quality, suitable for the downstream reverse osmosis step. It has been in continuous operation for over two years without fibre breakage, requiring maintenance cleaning only once every three days—a notable achievement for such a challenging water type. These results highlight a stable and easy-to-maintain solution with minimal to no chemical cleaning requirements. In addition, the system demonstrates the flexibility of NX Filtration’s HFNF technology to be integrated with other treatment technologies, enabling a more compact system footprint.
