Seawater desalination for cooling water production
Seamless UF Retrofit Delivering Reliable RO Pre-treatment without System Modifications
Seawater desalination for cooling water production
The Challenge
The NTPL desalination plant in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, was established to provide a reliable source of treated water for the power plant’s operations while reducing its dependence on freshwater resources.
After years of continuous operation, the existing ultrafiltration modules had reached the end of their service life and required replacement. As ultrafiltration forms a critical pre-treatment step for the downstream reverse osmosis (RO) system, maintaining reliable and stable UF performance was essential.
The customer therefore required a long-term replacement solution that could continue to provide high-quality RO feedwater, protect the RO membranes from suspended solids and particulate fouling, and maintain the required plant capacity. At the same time, the preferred solution needed to minimize modifications to the existing installation, avoid unnecessary capital expenditure and limit operational downtime during the replacement process.
The Solution
NX Filtration provided a direct 1:1 replacement solution using its NX Ultra HC60 V ultrafiltration modules. The NX Ultra modules were compatible with the existing UF installation and could be integrated into the existing skids without major modifications to the piping, supporting structure or overall system configuration. This enabled the customer to upgrade the membrane technology while continuing to make use of the existing infrastructure.
In total, eight UF skids were equipped with NX Filtration’s NX Ultra HC60 V modules. The retrofit approach offered several advantages. By avoiding a complete redesign or replacement of the UF system, the customer was able to reduce investment requirements and shorten the implementation period. Installation could be carried out with limited disruption to plant operations, while maintaining the existing process design and operating philosophy.
The NX Ultra membranes provide an effective pre-treatment barrier ahead of the reverse osmosis system. By consistently producing feedwater with a Silt Density Index (SDI) below 2.5, the UF stage helps reduce the particulate load on the downstream RO membranes. This supports more stable RO operation, helps limit membrane fouling and contributes to longer operating periods between cleaning cycles.
The replacement therefore not only addressed the immediate need to replace ageing UF modules, but also provided a reliable platform for the plant’s longer-term operational and capacity requirements
The Result
Following installation, the NX Ultra HC60 V modules demonstrated stable and reliable performance.
The upgraded UF system consistently met both the required production capacity and treated-water quality specifications. Operating flow and transmembrane pressure (TMP) remained stable throughout the monitoring period, indicating consistent membrane performance under the plant’s operating conditions.
Module integrity checks carried out after the replacement showed no leaks or abnormal conditions. The system continued to provide high-quality feedwater to the downstream RO process while maintaining the required SDI level.
The successful retrofit demonstrated that existing UF infrastructure can be upgraded effectively without the need for extensive system modifications. For the customer, this resulted in a reliable and cost-efficient replacement solution with minimal operational disruption.
The consistent performance of the NX Ultra modules has also strengthened the long-term cooperation with the customer, with NX Filtration becoming a preferred partner for future membrane replacement requirements.
